The GrindoSonic measurement systems based on Impulse Excitation Technology can be mounted in-line to provide real time testing of materials during the production process.

This technique can be used on finished samples and is fast, allowing you to test dynamic properties such as stiffness, damping and natural frequencies as material move along the production line.

By determining a product “finger print” it is possible to tell almost instantly whether a product is different to expected, and therefore pass or fail parts without having to damage them.

Founded over 50 years ago, and with over 2000 systems installed worldwide, Grindosonic is a recognised market leader in non-destructive testing based on the Impulse Excitation Technique (IET). Grindosonic prides itself on state of the art equipment that is easy to use and that is backed up by excellent service.

How It Works

A gentle tap excites the material – this can be manually or automatically applied.

Resonance vibrations form inside the part.

Frequencies and damping are measured and converted into elastic properties such as:

  • Youngs modulus
  • Shear modulus
  • Poisson’s ratio
  • Damping capacity
  • Porosity indicators

Precise and accurate measurements with absolutely no damage to the part.

Standards-based and repeatable, IET is described in ASTM E1876, C1259, C215, E3397 and more.

Resonance Vibration Fingerprint

With the GrindoSonic Impulse Excitation Technique a manufacturer can map the resonance vibration fingerprint of their parts. Two exactly identical parts will resonate in exactly the same way and so will produce identical results when tested by the Grindosonic IET tool. This result defines the “finger print” for that part which can then be used to identify good or bad parts. The result of a bad part will not match the known finger print, and therefore will be automatically rejected in the tool.

  • Reproduceable
  • Easy!
